MAHOTTARI/JANAKPUR: At least seven pilgrims died and 51 were injured when a bus carrying home-bound pilgrims from Dhanusha plunged into a river at Kumma on the Bhithamod-Sitamadhi road section in Sitamadhi in the Indian state of Bihar today.
The bus skidded off the Kathali bridge and fell — about 42 feet below — into the Jamar River at around 8:00am at Kumma, 20 kilometres from Jaleshwor, the district headquarters of Mahottari.
The pilgrims were returning home after completing their 10-day religious tour in India.
According to Bijaya Chaudhary, a police official at Sursand police post of Bihar, personnel deployed on the border had rescued the injured and sent them to hospital for treatment. Bodies have been sent to a local hospital in Sitamadhi for post-mortem.
Fifteen of the injured have been brought to Nepal; 13 are undergoing treatment in Jaleshwor and two at Janakpur Zonal Hospital. Eleven others are still in hospital in Sitamadhi. Others have returned home after treatment.
“The bus got stuck in the mud while the driver was reversing it, and in no time it fell into the river,” said Laxmeshwor Sah, one of the injured who is undergoing treatment in Janakpur. Bus driver Lale Yadav of Purandaha, Dhanusha is at large.
