Your friend with the beer belly must really be knocking ‘em back. A new review published in Nutrition Reviews found that alcohol might not pack on pounds—if you don’t overdo it.
Researchers examined 31 studies and found that moderate drinking doesn’t have a strong association with weight gain or high BMI.
The authors admit the research is mixed, but note that amount and type of alcohol make a difference. “Weight gain is likely to be present only at two to three drinks per day,” they write. (Experts define moderate drinking for men as no more than two drinks per day.)
Not just that: When some studies analyzed types of beverages separately, they found that wine drinkers were less likely to gain weight, while spirit drinkers were more likely to pack on the pounds. Not surprising considering cocktails often pack more calories and sugar.
