Alleged hijacker ,en route to Delhi from Kathmandu, arrested

KATHMANDU, Sept 13: A militant, Merajuddin alias Javed Ahmad, who allegedly hijacked Indian Airlines plane in 1999, has been arrested in Indian-administered Kashmir, BBC reported quoting the Kashmiri police on Thursday.

The flight IC-814 en route to Delhi from Kathmandu with 180 people on board was hijacked on 24 December. The hijackers had seized the plane 40 minutes after it took off from Kathmandu.

According to BBC, he was arrested from the south-eastern Kishtwar district.

BBC further said quoting the police that  Ahmad had returned recently from Pakistan via Nepal and was "recruiting youth for militant attacks".

The hijacked plane was flown to Kandahar in Afghanistan, from where the hijackers negotiated the release of militants fighting in Kashmir.

India had  then released three Kashmiri militants in exchange for the passengers. None of the five armed hijackers was caught.
