Forgery racket busted‚ seven held

KATHMANDU: The Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police today busted a seven-member racket involved in forging land ownership certificates and making money by selling land to unsuspecting clients.

Those arrested are: Anil Hekka (30), Dhan Krishna Bhasima (39), Bishwo Ram Suwal (36), Tanka Bahadur Budhathoki (31), Deepak Kyal (34), Shankar Prasad Bhattarai (33) and Karna Bahadur Bista (38).

They were arrested from separate locations in the Valley. Investigators said the racket was the biggest gang of forgers Nepal Police had ever caught. According to CIB, their modus operandi was to forge ownership certificates of persons living away from their land. In one case, the racket transferred the ownership of a land in Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur to a fake owner by forging the citizenship certificate of the rightful owner, Biramananda Agrawal (59) of Indra Chowk.

They submitted the forged citizenship certificate to District Land Revenue Office, Bhaktapur, and replaced the photo of Agrawal with that of another person in the register. Investigators said Hekka was the brain behind the racket. Hekka and his associates had tried to sanction Agrawal’s land for a guarantee of Rs 45 million. Investigators said they are preparing to crack down on other racketeers working with Hekka. Police have also seized maps of various districts, land ownership certificates, photos of different people and seal of various government offices from the gang. They have been referred to Metropolitan Police Range, Bhaktapur.
