Rescued from India, girl claims sexual abuse

RAXAUL (INDIA), AUG 29 -
A 17-year-old girl of Dang, who was rescued from traffickers’ clutches at the Raxaul railway station in India four months ago, has claimed her rescuer forced her to sleep with Indian police officers and railway officials.
Manita Sah (name changed) was rescued by Suman Paswan of Mahila Dalit Janakalyan Sanstha on April 26. Sah claimed that after she was freed from the traffickers, Paswan used to send her to Indian police and railway officials, who abused her sexually. She also accused Paswan of sexual abuse. The girl was brought to Nepal a few days ago with joint efforts of the police, media and members of Maiti Nepal, an organisation working against women trafficking.
While Paswan is absconding, the Indian police department is yet to respond to the allegations. It is learnt that an organisation run by Paswan had long been forcing young girls into sex trade and arranging their marriage with older men. Sah said she was forced to spend nights with police officers at Narkatiagunj and Betiya. She said she was forced to drink heavily and that the men raped her after she had passed out. When people from Maiti Nepal first visited Raxaul to rescue Sah, authorities asked them to return, citing legal difficulties.
Gita Puri of Maiti Nepal said Sah’s marriage had been fixed with one Hom Bahadur, who had apparently paid Rs 300,000 to Paswan. The Indian police eventually agreed to cooperate to rescue the girl after Indian rights activists piled pressure, as an underage girl was being forced into marrying a man much older. Sah is presently with Maiti Nepal.
