Indian army discusses Nepal's internal polity

NEW DELHI, AUG 04 - At a time when the immediate neighbour Nepal is grappling with a political stalemate, the Central Command Headquarters of the Indian army in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, has organised a seminar to discuss the troubled Nepali polity and several other issues related to Indo-Nepal ties.
The two-day closed-door discussions that wrapped up on Saturday saw the presence of Indian Ambassador to Nepal
Jayanta Prasad along with a considerable chunk of Indian 'experts' having close tabs on Nepal-related issues. Indian professors SD Muni and Sangeeta Thapaliya, former Indian ambassador to Nepal KV Rajan, former major generals of Indian Army Dipankar Banerjee and Ashok Mehta, among others, attended the deliberations.
According to sources, the Central Command of the Indian Army organises this kind of seminar on Nepal and China every alternate year.
"For nearly 10 years, the Central Command has organised this type of seminars. Basically, it is an attempt of the Indian Army to educate its officials on the pressing issues in neighbouring countries," the source added.
Ways to strengthen Indo-Nepal relationship amid the rise of new forces in Nepal and boosting up military-to-military links between the two countries were among the subjects discussed.
The experts, during the seminar, suggested that the government continue to engage with various political actors and increase efforts to sort out the "misgivings about India's interference in Nepal". Ambassador Prasad, on the other hand, explained the 'complexity' of the situation in Nepal.
"At present, nobody can determine where the current political course will lead," a source quoted Prasad as saying. "Nepal is in a fluid situation and India is watching closely."
